I’m not sure if anyone has pointed it out yet, but… Naomi and Crowley think it was Castiel touching the tablet that broke the connection and allowed him to get away from under Heaven’s control. In Crowley’s words:

She [Naomi] thinks that your touching the tablet has broken her spell over you. She’s got a lot on her plate, so you can’t fault her for missing it. I was thinking to myself, “self, if Cas got away from her by touching the tablet, why would he ever stop touching the tablet?” And then I thought to myself, “self…he hasn’t stopped touching the tablet, now, has he?”

very nice, great deduction, Crowley. but you’re missing one thing. Cas dropped the angel blade before he touched the tablet. he had his hand in the air, poised to bury the tip of the blade in Dean’s chest. but he dropped it, and then picked up the tablet from the ground.

I still believe it was Cas’s love for Dean that broke the connection and you can’t tell me otherwise.

I don’t think I will ever get over this scene. Dean was desperate to get out of there. So the “full proof” plan he comes up with is making Cas worry about him. He knew, that if Cas thought anything had happened to Dean, he’d come rushing in. And Dean used that against him. Bobby and Sam were in that house too, but Dean set up his plan around Cas.
